Comments on State Supreme Court Decision in Education Funding Lawsuit

“Our labor federation joined the CCJEF lawsuit 13 years ago because all children in Connecticut deserved better than an unfair and inequitable system that was shortchanging their public education. Yesterday, a majority on the state’s Supreme Court reaffirmed that more must be done to close the ‘gap between the poorest and neediest students and their more fortunate peers.’

“Their decision simply puts the ultimate responsibility for addressing and resolving the underlying cause of Connecticut’s broken education funding system on our elected leaders.

“The state’s highest court has essentially issued a renewed call to action. While the governor and lawmakers must do their part to fairly fund Connecticut’s neighborhood public schools, they alone can’t be expected to fix a problem decades in the making.

“Our union members across the state stand ready to continue working together as partners toward a better future for their students. We look forward to meaningful collaboration — not just with our elected representatives — but with district officials, parents and community advocates, to bring about long overdue and lasting change.”
