The Union Difference

AFT Connecticut is one of the most diverse labor organizations in the state, representing more than 30,000 working people in the areas of PreK-12 and higher education, healthcare and municipal and state government. Our federation is the largest representative of both acute care hospital professionals and college and university faculty in Connecticut. In addition, we have the political clout of AFT and AAUP’s combined 1.8 million members nationwide.

Union members earn better wages and benefits than workers who lack representation on the job. On average, their earnings are 27 percent higher than their non-union counterparts. And in states where employees are denied collective bargaining rights, workers’ overall incomes are lower.

Unionized workers are 60 percent more likely to have employer-provided pensions. More than 85 percent of members have jobs that provide health insurance benefits, but only 54 percent of those without a contract do.

Unions also help employers create a more stable, productive workforce – where employees have a say in improving their jobs.

So if you want your job to provide fairness and respect, better wages and benefits, then join or form an AFT-affiliated union or AAUP-affiliated chapter in your workplace.
