Our 2019 Convention: “Still Here and Still Growing”

Material sent to affiliated local union presidents in advance was, beginning in early February, linked to the event’s page at our website’s Calendar. Several documents provided to the 167 in attendance, including properly submitted policy proposals and leadership nominations, were posted online at the start of the May 18 event.

Convention activities were also “live-Tweeted” throughout the day from AFT Connecticut’s feed with the hashtag “#AFTCT19.”

The business agenda for the state federation’s 72nd annual convention included votes on a constitutional amendment and a policy resolution, as well as leadership for the next two years. Delegates and alternates representing 81% of the total membership of AFT Connecticut’s 92 affiliated locals took part in the three voice votes from the floor.

Both submitted proposals were adopted and the slate of nominees put forward ahead of the convention were elected to begin serving their 2019-20 terms on July 1.

Additionally, national union president Randi Weingarten addressed delegates via video, state federation president Jan Hochadel’s presented her annual report and awards and scholarships for 2019 were announced. All are now available online for members to access.

Members interested in representing their colleagues at AFT Connecticut’s 2020 convention are encouraged to learn their local union’s requirements for service as a delegate or alternate. Contact your steward, building representative or a member of your affiliate’s elected leadership board today to share your interest in helping shape the future of our state federation.
