About Us

AFT Connecticut is made up of more than 90 local unions throughout the state, governed by elected leaders sworn to uphold the federation’s Constitution & Bylaws. The executive committee includes a president, statewide vice president, secretary-treasurer and 28 divisional and at-large vice presidents charged with carrying out the organization’s mission and related policies. All are elected by delegates representing affiliated local unions throughout the state.

Every local is unique and operates autonomously, with each local’s governing body and membership making decisions in their own best interests. Locals vary in size from less than 10 members to more than 2,000. No matter how large or small, every AFT Connecticut affiliate receives support and assistance.

We are the proud state federation of the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers (AFT). We also represent local chapters of the nearly 50,000-member American Association of University Professors (AAUP), which affiliated with AFT in 2022 to create the nation’s largest higher education union.

Our national union is part of the 10-million-member American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), including its 200,000 member Connecticut state federation and regional labor councils.
