New Haven school to be union managed

IB ImageNew Haven's High School in the Community will become the first turnaround high school in the city and the first to be managed by the New Haven Federation of Teachers, Local 933. Turnaround schools came about as a result of the landmark 2009 teachers’ contract, where the district works to turn around lowest performing schools.

ConnCAN wins the 'If Bernie Madoff Worked in School Finance' Award

Every year, the University of Colorado's National Education Policy Center bestows its "Bunkum Awards" for "the most compellingly lousy educational research for the past year." Recipients are think tank reports that "have most egregiously undermined informed discussion and sound policy making." ConnCAN , the charter school lobbyist group, received the "If Bernie Madoff Worked in School Finance" Award for its report, "Spend Smart," on how to reform school funding in Connecticut.

Share My Lesson offers online access to vast resources

SMLThe AFT and Britain's TES Connect have come together to create "Share My Lesson," a new digital platform for U.S. educators to collaborate and share teaching resources and innovative ideas, with a significant emphasis on resources to guide teachers in implementing the new Common Core State Standards. The site is live, and teachers are already registering and sharing their best ideas with colleagues around the country.

New Haven teacher honored with U.S. History Teacher of the Year Award

And the U.S. history teacher of the year award goes to Gretchen M. Gurr, Hamden native, Southern Connecticut State University alumna and U.S. history teacher at James Hillhouse High School.
