Report looks at what makes high-poverty schools effective

IB ImageA new Education Trust report validates what every teacher knows is necessary to strengthen public schools and the teaching profession, says AFT president Randi Weingarten. "Building a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility among teachers, principals and administrators; focusing on continuous professional development for teachers; and ensuring teachers have the time, tools and trust they need to improve teaching and learning are essential ingredients to building strong public schools and a quality teaching force," she says.

New Haven school to be union managed

IB ImageNew Haven's High School in the Community will become the first turnaround high school in the city and the first to be managed by the New Haven Federation of Teachers, Local 933. Turnaround schools came about as a result of the landmark 2009 teachers’ contract, where the district works to turn around lowest performing schools.

ConnCAN wins the 'If Bernie Madoff Worked in School Finance' Award

Every year, the University of Colorado's National Education Policy Center bestows its "Bunkum Awards" for "the most compellingly lousy educational research for the past year." Recipients are think tank reports that "have most egregiously undermined informed discussion and sound policy making." ConnCAN , the charter school lobbyist group, received the "If Bernie Madoff Worked in School Finance" Award for its report, "Spend Smart," on how to reform school funding in Connecticut.
