Comments on the State Auditors' Review of the Sandy Hook Workers Aid Fund

State and local AFT leaders today made the following public remarks in response to the Auditors of Public Accounts' (APA) December 4 letter regarding the Sandy Hook Workers Assistance Program (SHWAP):

Lifting Up Managerial and Exempt Employees

Our state federation's ongoing efforts to empower a greater share of the public sector workforce with a voice on the job continue surging ahead. A week-long membership mobilization drive drew union leaders and activists from across the state — and the nation — this fall to AFT Connecticut's Rocky Hill headquarters. "ConnectiBlitz 2019" brought more than 60 managerial and exempt state employees into our labor family while at the same time strengthening one of our newest local affiliates.

Making Our Collective Voice "Heard in the Voting Booth"

The vote tallies in the 2019 General Election say it all; 23 members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions across the state won their respective races for municipal office. There is no debating the value of backing our sisters and brothers when they step up to show their communities that “labor is your neighbor.” Importantly, it also points to the path for restoring working peoples' political power as nationally important elections in 2020 draw near.

Joint Statement on Providing Pathways to Post-Secondary Success for Connecticut Students

AFT Connecticut President Jan Hochadel today joined educational partners to sign on to the following joint statement committing to create new and expand existing career pathways that will engage students:

Applying "Lessons Labor History Has Shown Us"

Recovery from the Great Recession of 2008 has been prolonged and uneven for all working people in America, particularly those employed by private, non-profit organizations. Members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated locals have over the past decade in contrast progressed more rapidly and benefited more fully from the improved economy. We're highlighting two recent collective bargaining wins that effectively demonstrate "the union difference" for this sector's otherwise vulnerable workforce.

Comments on a Voice for Educators on the Partnership for Connecticut's Governing Board

National and state AFT leaders today made the following public remarks regarding Jan Hochadel's appointment to serve as a member of the Partnership for Connecticut's governing board:

Empowering Members to Meet their Professional and Personal Needs

Being part of a larger labor family that extends beyond our communities offers tangible benefits for members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions. A national network provides a wealth of resources and countless opportunities for courses in professional learning, career advancement and retirement planning. Members can tap the knowledge of trained experts in high quality, cultivated workshops available in their worksites, at our state federation headquarters and at events held across the country.

Teachers, Nurses and Public Employees Back Fanelli and Walker for West Haven

West Haven — Members of the nearly 30,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting fellow union members Chrystal Fanelli and Susan Walker in West Haven's September 10 Democratic Primary Election. The labor federation's executive committee last month voted to add both active and retired educators to its slate of 2019 municipal endorsements. Members of local affiliated unions have since participated community canvassing and phone banking to help "get out the vote" for Fanelli, Walker and other endorsed candidates.

Fighting to "Keep Families Together"

Here in Connecticut and all across the country — particularly at our nation's southern border — refugees and immigrants face an increasingly hostile climate. Images of children caged in detention camps, workplace raids, families torn apart by deportation orders and violent hate crimes have become all too common. Through it all, union members have been bearing witness and taking action to defend vulnerable communities against intolerance and criminalization.

"Winning a Better Future for More Working People"

Veteran labor activists in both the private and the public sectors will attest to significant challenges in winning initial and first successor union contracts. AFT Connecticut-affiliated locals secured such collective bargaining agreements, arbitration awards and memoranda of understanding over the past three months. We're highlighting two of these important victories, which demonstrated how member engagement and internal organizing can overcome steep obstacles and make meaningful gains.
