AFT Convention Recognizes L+M Hospital Union Leaders, Addresses Staffing Levels, Patient Care

Los Angeles - The AFT at its national convention in Los Angeles bestowed the Everyday Hero healthcare award to the leaders of three AFT Connecticut unions at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. Delegates representing the second-largest nurse union in the nation also approved resolutions calling for safe staffing levels and efforts to reshape the healthcare industry to put patients before corporate profits.

L+M Unions Ratify Agreement; Parties Jointly Committed to System Success

New London - Registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), health technicians and technologists at Lawrence + Memorial today ratified a tentative agreement reached between the two parties last week. The ratification marks the end of a labor dispute that began in November when the previous contract covering the nearly 800 members of AFT Locals 5049 and 5051 expired.

New London - Caregivers illegally locked out of Lawrence & Memorial (L&M) Hospital 19 days ago today returned to work, temporarily halting a standoff over the future of health service delivery for the region. Lawrence & Memorial Corporation (LMC) representatives on Tuesday unilaterally ordered an end to the unlawful activity after talks with the unions representing the hospital's caregivers failed to produce a mutual agreement.

New London - Lawrence & Memorial (L&M) Hospital administrators this week committed multiple violations of federal law in rebuffing efforts by the facility's healthcare professionals to resolve the crisis of care impacting their community. Their union's representatives have filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) over "bad faith" negotiating tactics and the ongoing lockout, now in its 12th day. An additional charge is planned over an "offer" publicly announced yesterday by the hospital's spokesman that is provoking a strong response from the caregivers.

New London - Professional patient care providers locked out of Lawrence & Memorial (L&M) Hospital a week ago by their employer will have access to financial aid through the efforts of their union. Lawrence & Memorial Corporation (LMC) last Saturday cut off pay and terminated medical and dental coverage for nearly 800 registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), healthcare technicians and technologists and their families. AFT Connecticut and its national union yesterday set up a militancy/defense fund that has already raised over $20,000.00 to provide relief with the economic hardship of the lockout.

New London - The administration of Lawrence & Memorial (L&M) Hospital yesterday locked out its registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), healthcare technicians and technologists immediately following the end of a legally protected job action. Lawrence & Memorial Corporation (LMC) representatives refused to allow the caregivers to complete an unconditional return to their patients offered before they began the first strike in the hospital’s 101-year history. The local unions representing the nurses and techs on Tuesday filed a complaint seeking injunctive relief with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in the event LMC attempted their threatened lockout.

New London - Lawrence & Memorial Corporation (LMC) representatives today walked away from negotiations with nurses, caregivers and healthcare workers at Lawrence & Memorial (L&M) Hospital, setting in motion a strike set to begin tomorrow. Talks broke down when the corporation's representatives refused to keep working toward mutual resolution of issues impacting patient care sought by the unions representing approximately 800 of the hospital's employees. Registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and healthcare technicians will walk off the job at 6:00AM tomorrow in the first strike at L&M in the hospital's 101-year history.
