AFT UNI

Empowering Members to Meet their Professional and Personal Needs

Being part of a larger labor family that extends beyond our communities offers tangible benefits for members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions. A national network provides a wealth of resources and countless opportunities for courses in professional learning, career advancement and retirement planning. Members can tap the knowledge of trained experts in high quality, cultivated workshops available in their worksites, at our state federation headquarters and at events held across the country.

Our 2019 Convention: "Still Here and Still Growing"

Delegates representing the highest decision-making body in AFT Connecticut last month gathered to debate and determine the direction of our state federation for the next two years. Material provided at our annual convention is now available for all members, including officers' annual reports, the latest completed financial audit and recipients of the scholarships, citations and awards presented.

Promoting Professional Learning that Empowers Growth

The strength of our unions comes not from contracts or bylaws, but from the diversity and collective capacity of the nearly 30,000 women and men we represent. Our state federation's professional development (PD) program relies on both in order to offer a wide-ranging series of career advancement and labor leadership opportunities. Members of three divisions recently were asked to provide input and feedback for future course offerings as both new and previously presented workshops are scheduled in the coming weeks.

Providing "Proven Strategies for Building Power"

Building on successful volunteer-based initiatives spanning the past three years, AFT Connecticut will this fall launch the next generation of its Member Organizer Institute (MOI) program. The effort, jointly funded by our national union, state federation and local affiliates, seeks to build greater participation by offering compensation to our most valuable resource — active members. The application period is now open, and leaders are seeking potential candidates for a paid cohort to begin training in late September.

Helping Fellow Members "Improve their Practice"

As a democratic labor organization, AFT Connecticut adheres to the principle of local unions governed "of members, by members and for members." These values are evident in our professional development (PD) program, which relies less on big name experts and more on trusted colleagues to teach valuable career advancement and labor leadership skills. It is in this cooperative atmosphere that members can share their passion and expertise with each other.

Demonstrating Solidarity in Professional Development

Among the many benefits enjoyed by members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions is the opportunity to participate in career-relevant training, specialized education and advanced professional learning courses. Our state federation has in recent years increased the variety of topics, boosted the frequency of sessions, and expanded access to all of our diverse constituencies. To that end, leaders with distinct knowledge and unique skill sets have been tapped to serve as presenters for an increasing number of workshops.

Tools and Training to Help Leaders "Be the Union"

To boost support for affiliated labor leaders and activists, our national union has prepared a compilation of their wide-ranging and diverse leadership development and skills training programs. The "AFT UNI" catalog provides a comprehensive and single resource for information about courses provided at no cost and that can be adapted as needed. Our state federation has for several years coordinated several to facilitate participation by multiple unions — and plans to build on those efforts in 2018.
