Reigning-In Predatory For-Profit Colleges

Leading the charge to clean up exploitative policies and practices hurting students in higher education — and costing all taxpayers — is a new report released last week by our national union. Among highlights are the 2014 collapse of Corinthian Colleges as both an example and a call to action for increased oversight of the growing for-profit higher education "industry."

Spotlight: Connecticut State Employees, Part II

Last month's union member spotlight featured three public employees concerned about the devastating impacts of a proposed austerity state budget then under consideration by lawmakers. A package that makes deep cuts to vital public services has since been passed by the legislature signed into law by the governor. This month we sat down with three of their colleagues to learn more about the challenges facing a state workforce under increased pressure and operating with reduced resources.

Our Union Members are "Everyday Heroes"

AFT is made up of amazing teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel, higher education faculty and staff, nurses and healthcare professionals, state employees, early childhood educators and retirees. Our national union every two years recognizes some of these "Everyday Heroes" and three members of local unions in AFT Connecticut have been selected as semifinalists for their 2016 awards.

Spotlight: Members as Mentors

Educators and support staff in PreK-12 classrooms and community college lecture halls work hard to assure positive outcomes for the young people they teach, instruct and help guide. For many of our union members, they see their responsibility to do more than simply educate; they are "mentors," too. As the month set aside to recognize the value of mentoring comes to a close, we're spotlighting members who fulfill this vital role both on and off the job.

America's College Promise

Universal, free community college is edging closer and closer to reality. President Obama last week announced a major campaign to drive forward his America's College Promise initiative -- a guarantee of two years of free community college for qualified students. The effort was announced at a kick-off where an advisory board of 32 education advocates that includes our national union president was unveiled.
