"Green Cleaning" for Safer Schools

The state's environmental protection and public health agencies have teamed-up to create a tool to help educators reduce their students' exposure to dangerous chemicals and toxins in our schools. A new video campaign, "Wastebusters," was last month launched to debunk green cleaning "myths" and help teachers, school support staff, administrators, and parents avoid using hazardous cleaners, sanitizers or disinfectants.

Helping Children Thrive

Our national union last fall began seeking input from member teachers, school nurses, paraprofessionals and support personnel across the country for a major child health priorities initiative. The results have been compiled in a new report, Helping Children Thrive, that demonstrates the importance of student health, safety and well-being explicit in educators' shared values.

Recognizing National Healthy Schools Day

On the occasion of the 13th annual National Healthy Schools Day, AFT President Randi Weingarten today observed that "our children deserve the best possible learning environments to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st-century economy. Crumbling school buildings filled with environmental hazards won't cut it."
