Teachers, Nurses and Public Employees Back Patrice Granatosky for Groton Town Council

Groton — Citing her record of service and commitment to working families' issues, members of the nearly 30,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting Patrice Granatosky to continue serving on Groton's town council. The labor federation's executive committee voted to add the educator to its slate of endorsed municipal candidates for the November 7 General Election. Members of affiliated unions last month participated in a local community canvass and are engaged in additional efforts to help "get out the vote" for Granatosky.
 

Spotlight: Meeting Diverse Needs in Higher Ed

Most students in Connecticut's public community colleges are likely unaware that the majority of their professors may be non-tenure-track adjunct faculty. Despite their more precarious circumstances, these instructors are an integral part of the team that provides pathways to both gainful employment and future learning opportunities. During the week set aside to raise awareness of campus inequities, we're spotlighting a union member who began her higher education career as an adjunct and knows their worth firsthand.

Re-imagining High School for the 21st Century

The administration of President Barack Obama last week convened a first-ever “Summit on Next Generation High Schools,” bringing educators, administrators, policymakers and other stakeholders together from across the nation. Our AFT Connecticut president was among the union leaders to attend the event, which was designed to highlight best practices in recent efforts to prepare students for post-graduation success.

Educators' Voices Heard on ESEA Reauthorization

From grass-roots lobbying on Capitol Hill to a national telephone town hall to in-district meetings with elected officials, AFT members from across the country have focused on the all-important reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). AFT Connecticut-affiliated union members last week traveled to Washington, DC and met with U.S. Senator Chris Murphy in New Haven to press for a return to the original mission of the keystone federal law for K-12 education: equity.

Career Technical Education: Leading by Example

Excellent career and technical education (CTE) programs are an irreplaceable bridge from high school to productive middle-class lives for many students, and Congress must recognize that fact by placing excellent CTE at the heart of its overall strategy for schools. That is the message an AFT Connecticut union leader delivered last week to a U.S. Senate panel in Washington, D.C.
