Legislation Recognizing Paraprofessionals' Vital Role Advances

Paraeducators in Connecticut are applauding yesterday's bipartisan vote in the General Assembly's Education Committee in support of House Bill 5305, An Act Concerning School Paraprofessional Training. The proposed legislation would require school districts to provide at least one day of paid training and to paraprofessionals prior to the start of the school year.

Med Techs & Therapists at Danbury, New Milford Hospitals Celebrate First Contract

Danbury - Medical technicians and clinicians at Danbury and New Milford Hospitals yesterday voted overwhelmingly to ratify a first-ever contract following more than a year of negotiations with their employer. The union of approximately 260 surgical and radiologic technologists, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and respiratory therapists cast ballots 10 to one in favor of the tentative agreement reached with management.
 

L+M Hospital Caregivers Approve New Collective Bargaining Agreement

New London – Members of the three AFT-Connecticut affiliated unions who represent nearly 1,700 employees at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital yesterday overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year contract. Hospital and AFT leadership announced a tentative agreement on Monday. Specifics of the agreement, which run through June 30, 2019, were not announced.

Members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions earlier this month joined fellow educators and administrators from 18 other states in Washington, D.C. for the first-ever National Summit on Teacher Leadership. The two-day event brought union leaders and policymakers together to discuss the steps needed to promote the further development of classroom educators in public schools across the country.

New Courant Ad Asks for Budget Fairness

Hartford - The American Federation of Teachers and AFT Connecticut call on Gov. Dannel Malloy and the state legislature to ask the richest residents to pay their fair share of taxes to avert budget cuts that would hurt virtually all Connecticut families.
 
"Connecticut doesn't have a budget problem. Connecticut has a fairness problem," says a full-page ad in The Courant today, purchased by the AFT and AFT Connecticut.
