Advancing the Fight for Safe Hospitals and Health Facilities

As advocates build on progress in achieving safe staffing levels in Connecticut hospitals, community clinics and school-based health centers, a bill setting national standards has been introduced in Congress. Federal lawmakers last month raised legislation ahead of national Nurses Appreciation Week that promises to save lives and empower nurses to nurture their patients. Union members who have long fought for appropriate staffing ratios see the bill as progress that promises greater workplace safety and improved patient outcomes.

Rejecting the Failure to Deliver Shared Prosperity

The governor and lawmakers from both parties this past week released three separate proposals for narrowing wider state budget gaps anticipated in the next two fiscal years. These political leaders once again failed to offer long-term solutions that would grow the economy or commonsense strategies to stop endless cycles of deficits. Instead, their latest proposals rely heavily on austerity policies that would unfairly balance the budget on the backs of working families.

Despite providing the majority of direct and supportive patient care in the field, women historically have not held an equivalent share of leadership positions in hospitals or healthcare organizations. A similar imbalance exists in American politics and is evident in elected offices ranging from local school boards to Congress. During the month in which women's history month is celebrated, we're spotlighting a union member bucking these trends and "trailblazing" within the labor movement, in her industry and her community.
 

Public Employees Converge on the Capitol to Defend Rights

With chants of "We Will Fight!," a crowd of nearly 1,500 on Friday took over Minuteman Park in Hartford to denounce lawmakers' proposals to silence the voices of working people. The rally was organized by members of unions representing Connecticut's public sector workforce as part of a series of actions throughout the day at the State Capitol complex. They came to resist 77 individual bills that, if passed into law, would roll-back collective bargaining rights and undermine state and municipal public service employees' pay and benefits.
 

Yale, L+M Hospital Deal Needs Transparency, Independent Oversight

New London - Community leaders, advocates, caregivers and area residents are urging the state's top health official to select a truly independent monitor to oversee the sale of Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Health. The coalition in a letter to the Department of Public Health (DPH) commissioner praises price caps in the agency's agreement green-lighting the purchase by Yale-New Haven Health Systems (YNHHS). They also at the same time question the settlement's requirements to retain vital services as "too narrow and vague" to protect the public.

Delegates from across the nation last month at our national union's biennial convention took action on several key resolutions designed to help improve the quality of patient care in America. The event also featured a highlight with special meaning for the nearly 100 members attending from Connecticut; the presentation of AFT's "Everyday Heroes" award to one of our very own.
 

Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line

Hundreds of nurses and health professionals last week gathered in Washington, D.C. to raise their voices on the issues affecting frontline caregivers and their patients. They came to the nation's capitol for AFT's annual Professional Issues Conference (PIC) and Labor Academy for hospital and healthcare workers. More than 30 members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions were among the attendees for this year's event, organized under the theme "Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line."
 

L+M Hospital Caregivers Approve New Collective Bargaining Agreement

New London – Members of the three AFT-Connecticut affiliated unions who represent nearly 1,700 employees at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital yesterday overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year contract. Hospital and AFT leadership announced a tentative agreement on Monday. Specifics of the agreement, which run through June 30, 2019, were not announced. 
 

A New Years' Message to Our Members

As we enter 2016, I find myself looking for positives in the labor movement and it's easy to become discouraged. I hear politicians and big corporations blaming the poor, people of color and immigrants for the disappearance of the middle class and worsening income inequality. The real issues we face are obscured by political sideshow.
 

Yale-New Haven Health System Expansion Threatens to Drive Up Prices

Hartford - A new report released today finds that the expansion of Connecticut's largest hospital system threatens to bring large price spikes to consumers along the state's shoreline. The data reveal that communities impacted by Yale-New Haven Health System's (YNHHS) proposed acquisition of Lawrence + Memorial Health and possible absorption of struggling Milford Hospital could face large price increases as Yale-New Haven's market power grows.
