Telling Hartford HealthCare Union Members Are Not "Pawns"

Countless Connecticut residents are currently caught in a power struggle between a health network and an insurer, restricting access to preferred doctors and spiking medical costs. In response, leaders of the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC) took action on behalf of impacted union members and retirees. They are collectively demanding that Hartford HealthCare (HHC) immediately resolve its ongoing contract dispute with Anthem, Inc.

Advancing the Fight for Safe Hospitals and Health Facilities

As advocates build on progress in achieving safe staffing levels in Connecticut hospitals, community clinics and school-based health centers, a bill setting national standards has been introduced in Congress. Federal lawmakers last month raised legislation ahead of national Nurses Appreciation Week that promises to save lives and empower nurses to nurture their patients. Union members who have long fought for appropriate staffing ratios see the bill as progress that promises greater workplace safety and improved patient outcomes.

Rejecting the Failure to Deliver Shared Prosperity

The governor and lawmakers from both parties this past week released three separate proposals for narrowing wider state budget gaps anticipated in the next two fiscal years. These political leaders once again failed to offer long-term solutions that would grow the economy or commonsense strategies to stop endless cycles of deficits. Instead, their latest proposals rely heavily on austerity policies that would unfairly balance the budget on the backs of working families.

Fighting Forward for Patients, Celebrating Our "Everyday Hero"

Delegates from across the nation last month at our national union's biennial convention took action on several key resolutions designed to help improve the quality of patient care in America. The event also featured a highlight with special meaning for the nearly 100 members attending from Connecticut; the presentation of AFT's "Everyday Heroes" award to one of our very own.
 

Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line

Hundreds of nurses and health professionals last week gathered in Washington, D.C. to raise their voices on the issues affecting frontline caregivers and their patients. They came to the nation's capitol for AFT's annual Professional Issues Conference (PIC) and Labor Academy for hospital and healthcare workers. More than 30 members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions were among the attendees for this year's event, organized under the theme "Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line."
 

L+M Hospital Caregivers Approve New Collective Bargaining Agreement

New London – Members of the three AFT-Connecticut affiliated unions who represent nearly 1,700 employees at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital yesterday overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year contract. Hospital and AFT leadership announced a tentative agreement on Monday. Specifics of the agreement, which run through June 30, 2019, were not announced. 
 

Nurses and Health Professionals Back Mayor Finizio's Leadership for New London

New London - Citing his collective commitment to working families' issues, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting Daryl Justin Finizio's re-election as mayor of the city of New London. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Mayor Finizio.
 

L+M Corp. Indicted for "Unfair Labor Practices" Against Outpatient Facility Employees

New London - Caregivers at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital are responding to a December 23 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decision regarding illegal tactics used last fall to block colleagues from joining their union. The board's regional director on December 23 issued a formal complaint after reviewing evidence of Lawrence + Memorial Medical Group (LMMG) supervisors suppressing New London outpatient facility employees' organizing efforts. Proceedings are scheduled to begin March 10 at the NLRB’s Hartford regional office for an administrative law judge to hear testimony of the unfair labor practice charges against LMMG.
 

Healthcare, Education, and Public Service Professionals Back Betsy Ritter for State Senate

Rocky Hill - Citing her record of advocacy in the General Assembly, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting State Rep. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ritter's candidacy for the 20th state Senate District. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Rep. Ritter.
