AFT President Randi Weingarten Takes Back-to-School Tour to Connecticut

Washington - American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten will continue her national back-to-school tour Friday in Meriden and New Haven. During her swing through Connecticut, Weingarten will meet with teachers and students and highlight the collaborative efforts in the two cities as a model for reform.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy is expected to accompany Weingarten as she visits schools and talks with educators.

Meriden - Teachers in Meriden yesterday hosted public education advocate and AFT President Randi Weingarten in order to share their firsthand experience with innovative approaches to improve student learning in the classroom. The visit followed a tour of district schools last month by Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy and recent national attention on the early results of an expanded learning time initiative. The unique role that teachers and their unions have played in planning and adopting the measure has also generated interest from supporters of traditional public schools across the country.
