Legislative Internship

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is a 1.3 million-member national labor union chartered in 1916 by the AFL-CIO. The base of the membership works in public schools, public colleges and universities and healthcare institutions. AFT Connecticut has more than 28,000 public and private sector members in over 90 local unions representing teachers and school related personnel, state and municipal employees, healthcare professionals, and higher education faculty and staff. The public policy issues we work to address at the State Capitol include:

  • Public education
  • Privatization of public services
  • Worker and workplace health & safety
  • Professional development & training
  • Fair state budgets
  • Healthcare, Social Security & pensions
  • School and hospital staffing
  • Licensure and certification

Responsibilities of Interns:
Legislative interns provide support for the Political/Legislative Action and Communications Departments. They work directly with the Lobbyist and Political Coordinator to advance issues important to AFT Connecticut members in the General Assembly.  They read, summarize and track legislation, attend committee meetings, educate and mobilize grassroots activists and eventually lobby legislators. They work with the Communications Director to share this information with AFT Connecticut members in a variety of formats.  They may also provide assistance with political outreach.  Interns must have a strong work ethic, excellent writing skills and the ability to work well in a team setting.
