Unions in the Connecticut AFL-CIO and the State Employees Bargaining Agent Coalition (SEBAC) are organizing this event as part of coordinated day of action to resist anti-collective bargaining legislation. The rally is designed to send a loud, clear message to Republican state lawmakers that their attacks on unions are an attack on a voice for all working people.
Speakers will include an AFT Connecticut leader. The rally will be followed by a march of participants back into the Legislative Office Building (LOB), which is across the street from the park.
The General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee is holding a public hearing, beginning at 10:30AM, on numerous proposals that would strip working people of their rights on the job. Bills on the budget-writing committee’s agenda would:
  • Kill binding arbitration awards and agreements (SB 158, SB 268, HB 5013);
  • Destroy retirement security for state employees (HB 5695, HB 5696, HB 5780);
  • Force state employees to pay higher benefit co-pays and fees (SB 348, SB 578); &
  • Forbid retirement and healthcare benefit negotiations for all public employees (SB 368).

The rally is one of several events taking place at the LOB during the hearing, including two press conferences at:
  • 11:00AM with legislators who oppose these shameful attacks; and
  • 12:00PM with social justice, civil rights, faith and labor advocates in the D.U.E. (Democracy, Unity and Equality) Justice coalition.

On arrival, check in with our legislative advocates in Room 1-A of the LOB.
Note: several local unions are providing bus transportation for members to attend events throughout the day; contact your local leadership for details.
